Veronica Mars: Required Reading
In the VM fanfic world, there are stories that I like. There are stories that I love, even. And then there are the stories that crawl under my skin and leave me going "holy crap this is unbefuckinbelievable" and have me coming back to reread constantly, only to marvel at the talent of the writers and hope that some day my writing is anywhere near as amazing as theirs. These are those stories.
This actually started when I was at
missdeviant's in Austin, and she was asking me where to find good VM fic, and I kept listing stories off the top of my head that I thought she had to read. So, I thought maybe it'd be a good idea to compile all of my absolute favorite stories in one post.
Doing Favors by
aflowerinrain. (Logan/Weevil; R) “Okay, good deal! So we drop the investigation, and after school you and I can go out for Jamba Juice and burritos to celebrate the eighty years I’ll be spending in jail.”
A Lack of Basic Parenting Skills by
alocalband. (Veronica/Logan, Duncan; PG-13) She can't say who she loves most out of them. She tells herself it's Jordan. She tells herself of course it is. She tells herself to shut up already.
Written Out by
always_winter (Duncan, Logan; PG-13) Duncan guessed that there was more than one way of crossing the finish line.
Let's Never Call It Even by
amerella. (Logan/Weevil; R) Logan used to feel like that all the time, every second, but lately he can never figure out how he feels. He’s angry, sometimes. It takes him some time to realize that he’s angry now.
we remember our bedrooms by
amerella. (Lilly/Various; R) Damn, these boys can’t even begin to handle someone like her, can they?
We are using our own skins for wallpaper by
annakovsky. (Veronica/Logan; R) "You WORRY?" Logan says, and for a second he badly wants to hit her, beat her stupid condescending face in, punch her in the neck. When he turns towards her, furious, he sees the bruise his father left, and jumps back so hard his head hits against the doorframe and for a second he sees stars. "Fuck!"
with the furies breathing down your neck by
annakovsky. (Logan; PG-13) You are sixteen years old, and your girlfriend was just murdered. You think this is the worst day of your life. You are sixteen, and you don't know any better. You wonder who you're supposed to go to Homecoming with now.
The Past Is A Prologue by
boyfriendincoma. (Logan; R) Someone once said that the first step to eternal life is that you have to die. If that's true, Logan Echolls is going to live forever.
The World Ends in Fire by
boyfriendincoma. (Logan; R) He would look good on the cross. He had always looked good on the cross.
Snapshot by
crimsonclad. (Veronica/Logan; R) Veronica turned to look at Logan. "Why don't we ever have crazy public sex in men's bathrooms? God, the things I've given up for you."
Shuffle (Greatest Hits of 1966) by
fairytale_echo. (Ensemble, Veronica/Logan; R) If she had more words, she would tell him that now it’s not about hurting each other or something missing and painful. Now it’s about Tuesday night pizza with her Dad, movies with Wallace, teasing laughter and hard kissing, and the epic greatness of ordinary life.
Five Matches That Logan Echolls Never Lit by
fox1013. (Logan; PG-13) There are worse matches you've lit.
Oh You Know Whoops by
helpwess. (Kristen Bell/Jason Dohring RPF; R) Hey everybody, Kristen singsongs to herself, combing her shower-wet hair. Donate to help the hurricane victims! I'm kind of totally in love with my costar! I just came so hard in the shower that I got a cramp! Watch Veronica Mars Wednesdays at nine!
It's The Company You Keep by
hobviously. (Mac; R) He won't leave her mind and her fantasies and her fingers (his touch was so precise and she knows why now, oh god). She can hardly find air; she is coming to believe that she does deserve him.
The Wallace Inquisition by
jwynn. (Wallace, Veronica, Logan; PG-13) A moment of silence passed in which Wallace gave Veronica the raised eyebrow of I Can’t Believe You Just Did That, You Must Be Trippin’.
Grayscale by
marylane23. (Lamb; R) You may not believe it after talking to the likes of Veronica Mars, but Don Lamb is not the bad guy. Pithy labels like that are for idiots and children. Nothing bugs him quite like being pigeonholed by those naïve enough to swear the world is straddling some discrete divide between black and white.
Hypothetical by
marylane23. (Logan, Duncan; PG-13) Logan’s got the experience and Duncan gets in the lucky punches, and soon they’re both patients, getting stitched up while the girl they love is in surgery four floors above them.
Strikeout (I Need You) by
missambs. (Logan/Veronica; R) Standing on the edge of life death love hate the bridge, all he sees is Veronica above him below him next to him all around him.
Purple Monkey Dishwasher by
missdeviant. (Veronica/Logan; NC-17). Maybe the way it happened was that Logan stroked Veronica’s hair, and he cried about his mother/father/Lilly, and thanked Veronica from saving him from his foolish and self destructive ways. And she handed him Kleenex, while having multiple orgasms.
I Haven't Seen Barbados by
monimala (Mac; PG) She doesn't swear off men. Just boys.
it's just a ride by
passionflows. (Veronica/Logan; R) Force equals mass times acceleration, and here they go again.
Fresh Egg by
sadiekate. (Logan, Wallace; PG-13) Wallace looks at Logan like he’s one of the slow kids that the yellow signs on suburban streets warn about. It’s one of his default expressions, Logan has noticed.
Who Was Crying Or What They Were Crying For by
sadiekate. (Logan/Veronica; PG-13) When the gun salute goes off, she puts her fingers in her ears and tries to pretend her world hasn’t exploded around her.
Cuttings by
sexycereal. (Logan/Veronica; PG) That is how the world sees Logan Echolls. Veronica suddenly feels very glad that she knows him personally because it means she can hate him legitimately for behaving like an ass.
Send A Little Rain by
sexycereal. (Logan/Veronica, Duncan; R) ...you’re kind of busy watching your life disintegrate down into letters. Z for zoo. F for fail. L for… well, too many things, like, love and life and Lilly, Logan, Lianne – loser. You hand your dad an infinite amount of pages covered in red Fs and his expression is pained. You lose at life.
On The Road Again by
silviakundera. (Weevil/Veronica, Logan; PG-13) He says it while he's unfolding his napkin to scrub at a spot he'd left on the table, just says it like that, like it's nothing to say those types of things to her. Like maybe she never even noticed that he had let her in. What it meant that he trusts her to trust him.
Hollow You Out by
sinaddict. (Duncan/Logan/Veronica; R) Logan does not want to be at Tri-City Hospital at eleven-thirty on a Friday night. Veronica hates everything about hospitals. And Duncan wants to go home and take a sleeping pill to forget the whole damn mess.
we all fall down by
sinaddict. (Veronica/Lamb, Keith/Lamb; R) It wasn't supposed to end like this, and now you don't know what to do.
A Clean Suit by
sloanesomething (Beaver, Dick, Logan; PG-13) Beaver didn't even know about it until Dick told him, and then he thought, But we were friends, I should have known first.
Hindsight by
sloanesomething (Logan, Logan/Lilly, Logan/Kendall, Veronica/Logan; NC-17) Well, he thinks, fair enough. As long as they’re substituting.
11:11 by
slowtosurface. (Veronica; PG) Veronica wants to know if there's an easy way to tell Meg that once normal leaves, it doesn't come back.
Detective Lessons by
slowtosurface. (Veronica, Keith; PG) He thinks if he doesn't keep going, she'll lose her absolute faith in him. She’s all he’s got left. He can't look small to her.
Five Things That Don't Surprise Veronica Mars by
sltt. (Veronica/Logan; R) He presses himself to her and runs his hands through her hair. He says "I don't know why I want you," and she’s breathless to feel how hard and heartbroken he is.
Misericordia by
soundingsea. (Lizzie Manning/Duncan; PG-13) She tries to leave a blank space in her head for a voice to speak, to envelope her with warmth and to tell her that Meg will be okay. No voice speaks in Lizzie's head. And Meg doesn't wake up.
Where Steel And Water Collide by
soundingsea. (Mac/Veronica; PG-13) Mac notices a glint of steel at the back waistband of Veronica's jeans. Since she's seen TV before in her life, she's got a pretty good idea what that is. She decides she doesn't really need to push Veronica right now. She'll talk when she's ready.
Margaret, Mary-Kate, Test Subject, Cousin by
roisinmachine. (Logan; PG-13) Logan hasn’t seen her since she was nine and he only remembers two things about Blythe but he sort of wishes he was in her ragged little room with a baseball bat, smacking paparazzi out of the trees for her. He tells her to turn on the news and wait.
Neither Thought nor Memory by
thedorkygirl. (Veronica, PG-13) Veronica's terrified that soon there will be an entire day with neither thought nor memory of Lilly. Maybe that'd be okay for the dead girl, but the one still alive can't allow it.
think you broke the wings by
thedorkygirl. (Lilly, Celeste, Aaron; R) She would never be certain when it was that she had finally understood what Duncan was wailing. ...Most times, though, she would say that it was when she saw Lilly's foot at that odd angle. Blood could be explained -- for it might not have been blood, perhaps it had only occurred to her that it was blood in the memories but not the actual moment -- but Lilly's foot was catawampus. At least, this was where she dropped the mail. This was where she liked to think that she knew.
Broken Toys by
theohara. (Veronica/Lilly/Logan/Duncan; NC-17) You are Veronica Mars, badass in a threesome with the two people that would make Duncan Kane's head explode, and that makes you feel a little bit evil and even more turned on... which you'll analyze later when Logan isn't pulling your shirt off.
good day by
windsor (Logan; PG-13) ...and for a second, you want to hurt something, you want to make someone else feel worse than you do. But it passes, and you're just left sitting on his stupid leather couch, staring at your stupid useless hands. Stupid, you keep thinking, you're so, so stupid.
living is what kills you by
windsor. (Logan; PG-13) You are Aaron Echolls' son. You are an 09-er if there ever was one. You don't do student council and you're not on the football team, but you're famous and nobody can hurt you except for the people that matter. Half of them are dead.
movies of your dreams by
windsor (Logan; PG-13). Thing is, you've always bounced back, each time a little less, but you'd done it because you'd had to, because you needed it more than anything else. You can't even try, this time.
A Ghost at Beck and Call by
typicrobots (Veronica/Logan; PG) Veronica's learned from experience that a tragedy without warning is the worst kind, and if ever there was a person who embodied that, it's Logan.
The Comeback: The Vanity Fair Profile by
yahtzee63. (Aaron Echolls, Ensemble; PG-13) Aaron Echolls may again be a free man, but only time will tell if he can still be a star.
Somewhat sadly, this is the most productive thing I've done all day.
